Carnival in Basel 2022

Finally, it's time again for "WENN'S AM MÄNTIG VIERI SCHLOOT"!

In just a few days, Basel will be upside-down again – from Monday, 07.03.2022 to Wednesday, 09.03.2022 "Dame Fasnacht" will be back. The Carnival in Basel belongs to Basel like the Chlöpfer sausage or the FC Basel and the city goes wild for three days; lovingly referred to as the "drey scheenschte Dääg". Due to its uniqueness and quality, it is an intangible UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After the pandemic lead to a two-year break, the question arose yet again as to whether the carnival should take place considering the cruel war going on in Ukraine. André Voirol, who has been involved in the Carnival in Basel for decades, comments as follows: "It's a legitimate question, which was also raised during the Gulf War (1990-1991). But the Basel Carnival is not a simple folk festival, it's a celebration of the arts and it points out the grievances in society."
The Carnival in Basel is known for its political statements and also – or especially – this year clear responses on the current terrible events are to be expected from the carnival artists. The ideas range from peace fires to 15-minute rest periods, according to chairwoman Pia Inderbitzin.
