Impress Your Visitors From Home — Kitti’s Tips

10. August 2016

My name is Kitti Dobos and I work for Coopers as a Talent Resourcer. If you are living and working away from your home country, like me, then I am sure you've been in the following situation: You get a phone call from an old friend, school mate or your little brother (who normally never call you) announcing at last minute that they want to come and visit. And then they expect you to be their tour guide for the weekend too. So let me help you with some ideas for the Basel region to ensure they'll go home and tell their friends what an amazing time they had in Switzerland.

For party animals: Bars and nightlife downtown Basel
If it's nightlife you're looking for, then the “Steinenvorstadt” is your best bet. You'll find lots of different bars and restaurants there. Why not sit outside Mr. Pickwick's Pub, watch a game of football and try their special beers? And if you want to dance until the early morning, then head round the corner to Paddy Reilly's. All good nights out end at Paddys!

For good old friend: Grill and chill by the Rhine
The atmosphere by the Rhine on a summer evening is really unique. The riverside comes alive with lots of people grilling and chatting. The temporary bars, which the Swiss call “Buvette” are only open in the summer and are a great place to hang out. Don't be surprised if you see ladies walking past you wearing nothing but their swim wear, this is part of true Basel culture!

For everyone: Stunning alpine views
The beautiful Swiss mountains are so close! Less than 30km away lies the Passwang, one of the best places see the snow sparkling on the mountain tops on a clear day. Choose one of many different hiking routes and if you feel adventurous you can hire scooters and ride along the path down into the valley, it's great fun!

For kids: Castles and amazing views
Take the number 10 tram out to Dornach and visit the so-called “Goetheanum”, an  anthroposophical building that has no corners and really stands out in it surrounding. From there you can walk up to the “Burg Dorneck” castle and the kids can run around and explore the ruins while you get the grill going. Check out the spectacular views over the city from there too.

I hope these ideas will help you and your visitors explore the Basel region this summer. Switzerland is like a treasure chest, there are so many things to see and do. I fell in love with this country when I moved here and as an expat, I believe that nobody could ever be bored here, whether it's for a couple of days or for a lifetime.
