5 Minutes with Business Manager IT Bettina von Steiger

02. July 2019

Our Coopers team is constantly growing, which we are really excited about. In the last few blog posts we introduced our new team members. But today, the focus is on Bettina von Steiger – she works at Coopers for two years now. She started as Senior Consultant and is now Business Manager IT for the Coopers office in Bern.

Bettina, you are a trained strategic purchaser and have worked as Purchasing Manager for many years. Before you joined Coopers you were already involved with IT and human resource related issues. What motivated you to take on recruiting as your main profession?
Getting to know the other side, as supplier. And to have a closer relationship with the candidates, who we look after during the whole interview process.

So, how is the supplier side?
It is definitely more difficult than procurement. As a Purchaser you are the client, so the challenges as a Consultant are greater.

How did you come across Coopers back then?
A former colleague introduced me.

For 15 years you have worked at Swisscom. A giant company compared to Coopers Group. What about a SME appealed to you?
To be the entrepreneur in the enterprise, which is only possible in your organization within large corporations. I like that a lot.

Was it an easy decision to make that change?
Yes and no. After so many years at Swisscom it required quite some courage to start off something completely new in my career. Yet, I absolutely do not regret taking the plunge!

In your opinion, what is „the next big thing" in the recruiting industry?
More and more companies will outsource their recruiting and service providers like Coopers are called upon to streamline their processes and use efficient tools to find and place the right candidates quickly.
Digitalization is another big thing. Though, I do not think that electronic interviews will replace personal meetings. Face-to-face interaction is and will remain superior to screen-to-screen.

Which career advice have you received that you would like to pass on?
Work should give you pleasure, then you are also ready to go the extra mile and be successful. A job that does not suit you or that constantly creates negative stress will make you sick. You should break away from that.

You mention stress. In your position you have a lot on your plate all the time. What do you do to relax and to switch of?
I am with my horse daily and am outdoors a lot. That is good for me.

Traditionally, we finish our „5 minutes with" interviews with a few unconventional questions. Are you ready?

Mac or PC?
Mac

My favourite app is...
MeteoSwiss and WhatsApp

Which three things would you bring to a deserted island?
My husband, my daughter and my horse.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
To start off the day I need two cold energy drinks. I don't like coffee.

Please finish the following sentence: „I love working in recruiting because..."
...I get to meet many interesting people who are dealing with the latest technologies.

Thank you for the pleasant conversation, Bettina.
