Coopers’ Sustainability Strategy: One Tree for Each Candidate Placed

23. January 2020

Planting new trees with Coopers!

Climate and geopolitics are central issues at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos. This shows that sustainability and climate protections have made it to the top of many political agendas. The Zukunftsinstitut classifies Neo-Ökologie as one of the mega trends for 2020 and for the whole new decade. This involves a new understanding of ecology, that concerns all industries worldwide and creates permanent changes.

Greenwashing, the hypocritical environment protection to boost reputation and marketing efforts, gets companies nowhere anymore. Such scams are exposed quickly, since the sovereignty of information lies with the consumers. And these are no longer radical fringe groups of eco-activists. Concern about the climate emergency has reached the general public and is mobilizing many; consider the worldwide Fridays for Future demonstrations.

What used to be nice-to-have is indispensable today; especially if companies want to remain profitable in the future. At the current World Economic Forum, Philipp Hilderband, Vice Chairman of the world's largest investment manager BlackRock, said that climate risks are among the most important investment risks. Therefore, their portfolio management will take greater account of companies' sustainability strategies in the future. Therefore, anyone who does not focus on sustainability will lose the support of investors and society alike.

What are our climate protection measures?

The earth fears for its green lungs - trees have the fascinating property of drawing harmful carbon from the atmosphere while at the same time providing oxygen. But trees and entire forests are being cleared for economic reasons, and the climate change that has taken place so far is also having a hard time on our nature. The world is burning, from the Amazon to Australia. A large proportion of the beech trees in Germany are terminally ill. Natural forests are giving way to extensive agriculture with a tendency towards monocultures.

A current study conducted by ETH Zurich shows where worldwide reforestation is feasible. According to that, an area the size of the USA can be reforested globally. The study's director, Tom Crowther, speaks of "the most effective climate protection option we have, by far".

Afforestation against climate change

Coopers is now using precisely this option to support climate protection with tree donations. As a company we want to take responsibility and contribute to the preservation of the environment. We are convinced to live in a time of change, in which we can make a difference. We must seize this opportunity, as it concerns us all.
In a first step, we forwent Christmas presents last year in order to donate the money to the non-profit organisation PRIMAKLIMA instead. In the future, we will plant one tree for every candidate we place and thereby create new forests. This is part of our sustainability strategy, which we would like to expand further. After all, it requires sustainable action by each individual in day-to-day business to fight the climate emergency and to ensure that the newly growing trees do not themselves fall victim to the effects of climate change again.

About PRIMAKLIMA
Almost 30 years of experience - PRIMAKLIMA is the oldest non-profit organisation in Germany which exclusively implements forest projects for climate protection. It uses the money where it has the greatest effect. The magazine Finanztest (March 2018) has critically examined the compensation offers of six organisations. As one of three providers, PRIMAKLIMA was rated with the overall mark "very good".
