We are excited to share an interview with our dear friend and client of many years Christopher Cushnan. We go way back, 15 years to be precise. Christopher has been just as long with his employer CEMEX, a leading sustainable construction materials and solutions company, headquartered in Mexico and operating around the globe.

We appreciate this interview as it is a trip down memory lane and shows our value for long-term partnerships. Let’s start at the very beginning.

Coopers: Christopher, how do you know Coopers?
Christopher: It has been a long time since I first got in touch with Chris (Biedermann) and Denise (Stuker). In 2008, when the financial crisis hit, the program I was working on was affected, too and I had to look for another position. In that process I came across Cemex, a multinational building materials company headquartered in Mexico. Given my Colombian and Irish roots, together with my experience of working in several European countries, I was intrigued. So, I reached out to the company who had the mandate to recruit their personnel – and that is when I first got in touch with Chris and Denise.

What happened next?
Well, I did sign a contract with Cemex (and am still with them). But also, working with Chris and Denise turned into such a valuable partnership, that we, Cemex, as a company stayed in business with them. We got to be their very first client, the first Coopers client. Sure, it was a bit risky, but Cemex was not a big player in Switzerland back then, so we considered it a mission to grow together with Coopers.

What convinced you to take that risk?
The people: Chris and Denise! No question about that. Since I first dealt with them, we had a mutual respect and a connection. They truly cared, they offered so much dedication and support throughout the whole recruitment process. I wanted other Cemex applicants to experience the same. We stayed with them – and still have a lasting partnership that both sides cherish.

What makes the difference in working with Chris, Denise, and with Coopers?
It was simply easy to bond. Their support went beyond business related topics. The communication was always open, transparent, and friendly. There are two things, that stand out:

  • Great matchmaking! Coopers is very good in understanding us and meeting our needs. They go beyond screening CVs and are thus able to find the right candidates who truly match with Cemex.
  • The partnership! It is common practice that once a recruiter has placed a candidate, the relationship ends. Not with Coopers. With them, once the placement is done, that is the moment the relationship really takes off. For years they come visit the people they placed with us, to check up on them, how life is going; they invite them to events or one-on-one coffee and lunch dates. They genuinely care. Candidate- as well as client-side.

Does that not bother you being the client and employer?
Not at all, one hundred percent not. Our relationship is based on trust. It is good to know they are truly interested in whether they met our expectations and what candidates really match well with our organization. Of course, they meet with managers, too, upon their visits. Through this investment on their side in our long-term partnership is how they understand us and can match us with the right candidates.

That is nice to hear. We are highly motivated to maintain our great partnership, too.
Let’s change the topic. Christopher, you had leading positions for years. Being a leader in today’s VUCA world can be quite a task. What characteristics make a successful leader, in your point of view?
The ability to adapt to change! Change is a constant. Today’s world is afflicted by instabilities from conflicts to pandemics, war and environmental crises et cetera. Flexibility is the answer to change.

My situation requires a lot of flexibility, in how I work, too. Half of my team is based in Mexico, the other half in Europe. Keeping a virtual team together and engaged can be challenging, among other reasons because of the time difference of eight hours. I keep a flexible schedule and base my leadership on trust, i.e. I am results-driven rather than controlling every move. We are all rated by our team outcome, so we all have to deliver.

Sounds like a challenge, indeed. How does a day in your agenda look like?
My afternoons and evenings are usually pretty booked. But my family and friends are aware of that. It is all a question of organization and communication; and I compensate for it, like by doing sports in the morning. It is important to maintain a healthy work-life-balance, which for me includes tennis to clear my head.

Again, flexibility is key! Learn how to adapt to given situations. There are many ways to skin a cat. Keep your goals in mind, check all external factors and then go for it.

How did you learn that?
I was lucky enough to have lived in different cultures. That forces you to adapt and to keep an open mind. I always recommend young people who are in their studies and without family yet to work and travel in other countries as much as possible. Those experiences come in handy, also later in life.

An example: Working in a Latin company but being based in Europe comes with some challenges. The understanding of “punctuality” is quite different – while Europeans consider the scheduled time sharp, in Mexico it rather means “around this time”.

Moreover, it is common to have important meetings over lunch in Latin countries. They want to get to know each other over a meal, to have a normal conversation. That is when many deals struck.

My message here is: Flexibility refers to understanding and accepting differences! In all aspects of life.

Thank you for sharing this advice. Let’s turn the tables: What is the best leadership advice you ever received?
Treat people the way you want people to treat you! That mindset has shaped my younger self and my whole career.

The key is to see the human across from you, not “the CEO”, “the worker” or “some employee”. To be humble and to show everyone the same respect is what makes leaders special.

That skill is not a given. You learn how to do that by observing people you admire. Then you go out, try to replicate what they do, and you walk the talk!

It is exactly what Chris and Denise do. Whether as employees at a large enterprise or whilst running their very own agency – they are still the same person. Kind, funny, and caring. Their values have not changed with their success and that reveals true personality. They have no exclusive “corner office”, for example, and that sends a clear message. It is why we, Cemex, but also me, Chris, appreciate this collaboration so much. Because it is a partnership.

Thanks so much for those kind words, Christopher. We couldn’t agree more, the person we are dealing with matters the most! But, how do you get there? In other words: What do you consider the most important job interview question to get a glimpse of the “person behind the CV”?

There are two questions, I always ask.

  • Why do you want this job? – The right answer is not something like “I want to grow”, but rather, what the candidate can contribute to our team and company. Learning and thereby growing results automatically.
  • What do you do in your free time? – To me, it is important what a person does with their time. It is a nice icebreaker and gives an opportunity to bond on a personal level. I appreciate people who find joy in other things than their job, as it ensures they show up for work with a fresh mind.

Good questions. It is also why we have some funfacts about each team member on our team page, giving others a chance to relate.

Thank you so much for sharing your time with us as well as your kind words and your experience. We look forward to the next time you stop by for a coffee (or two). You are welcome anytime!

We hope you enjoyed this interview.
