Top 5 Cover Letter Tips
The first thing job-seekers usually do is dig out their certificates and diplomas from a box in the cellar. Then they start scanning the job sites to find their dream job and as soon as they find something, they want to send off their application immediately. But wait! Something is missing: the cover letter. Suddenly the job-seeker panics: What shall I write and how shall I go about it? Not everyone enjoys writing and writing about yourself is not easy.
Don't worry, our recruiters at Coopers read lots of cover letters every day and know exactly what it takes to write a good cover letter. Here are our tips for you. You will surely be able to impress the hiring manager if you take our advice!
1) Take your time
The cover letter is the first thing the hiring manager will read, so it is worth taking some time to make a good impression. Plan around 1-2 hours and then read your text the following morning before sending off your application.
2) Pick up on keywords in the job advertisement
Each job application requires a unique cover letter. You can re-use the text about your career or your competencies if you like, but ideally each job application should have a different cover letter. For example, if you are applying for a job as Senior IT Business Consultant that requires experience in project management and controlling, then elaborate on this requirement in your cover letter and say something about a relevant project and why you enjoyed working on it. You don't need to pick up on every single requirement, choose those which make you stick out from the crowd most.
3) Avoid boring lists
The hiring manager will read your cover letter and look at your diplomas, so you do not need to list all your previous jobs on your resume. The cover letter provides the opportunity to highlight the positions that are most relevant for the job you are applying for.
4) Choose the right format
Your writing style should coincide with the job advertisement. If you are applying for a job at a young start-up, feel free to be quirky. If you are applying for a job at a bank, then write in a more business-like manner. Let a colleague, friend or family member read the text to avoid spelling mistakes. Avoid using the subjunctive, always write "I can" instead of "I could". The cover letter should be no longer than one page.
5) Be different
The cover letter provides a great opportunity to present your personality. Use this opportunity and write positively. Show the hiring manager how passionate you are about the job. If you like you can also write why you are interested in working for that specific company. Many people may be applying for the same position, how can you stick out from the crowd?
We hope these tips will help you make a good impression with your next application.
Good luck!
