"WENN'S AM MÄNTIG VIERI SCHLOOT" – Basel Carnival 2020

The Basel Carnival is an integral part of the city's identity and, because of its uniqueness, is part of the immaterial UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. In just a few days it will be time again – the "drey scheenschte Dääg" are coming up ("the three best days")! The Basel Carnival 2020 will take place from Monday, 02.03.2020 to Wednesday, 04.03.2020.

Traditionally, the Basel Carnival begins in the early morning hours of Monday with the Morgenstreich – before sunrise even. All the lights go off, so that only the myriad of brightly coloured lanterns of the carnivalists illuminate the alleys and the numerous viewers. At 4:00 am sharp, the drum majors give the command "Morgestraich: Vorwärts, marsch!" whereupon the cliques join in the eponymous march and begin their foray through the Basel city center to the sounds of piccolos and the drumming of the tambours. For exactly 72 hours, Basel will be turned upside down - we'll sum up for you what there is to experience.

Dates and Events of the Basel Carnival 2020

MONDAY, 02.03.2020
04:00 am: Morgestraich in the Basel city center
01:30 pm: Cortège – Large carnival parade with Larven (head-masks), Waggis-Wägen (coaches), Guggemusik, & co. (Route)
As of 07:00 pm: Schnitzelbänke – Satricial verses in Swiss German address recent events and lampoon decision makers. The local station Telebasel broadcasts many Schnitzelbangg performances.
Monday evening to Wednesday morning: Lantern exhibition on the Münsterplatz – The cliques display their elaborately designed lanterns; many are artistically hand painted and visualize the current sujet (theme). Top subject 2020 is the climate, the Basler Zeitung speaks of the Greta-Fasnacht.

TUESDAY, 03.03.2020
During the day: Kid's carnival – Tuesday afternoon belongs to the little ones, the Binggis. The Basel kid's carnival turns the city into a hustle and bustle. The kids wear creative costumes and roam the streets in small groups with drums and handcarts to distribute Dääfeli (candy) and self-written Zeedel (witty leaflets).
As of 06:30 pm: Guggenkonzerte – Drums, trumpets, kettledrums and co. play cheerful melodies. The Stärnmarsch starts at the Messeplatz towards the city center. The Gugge concerts take place at the Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz and Claraplatz from around 07:30 to 11:00 pm.

WEDNESDAY, 04.03.2020
01:30 pm: Cortège (see Monday, 02.03.2020)
As of 07:00 pm: Schnitzelbänke (see Monday, 02.03.2020)
12:00 – 04:00 am: Towards the end, the carnivalists will give their all once more, before the Endstreich on Thursday morning at 04:00 am finishes off the Basel Carnival 2020 with a last piece of music.

Good news for everyone who didn't get enough of the Basel Carnival after the Endstreich: On the three Sundays following the carnival, the carnivalists are going on a "Bummel" (a stroll). The clique members take a trip, stop for a bite to eat and upon their return to Basel play their carnival music once more from around 04:00 to 10:00 pm – usually without any constumes and head-masks.
The dates for the Bummel-Sundays 2020 are: 08.03.2020 | 15.03.2020 | 22.03.2020
