Your perfect LinkedIn Profile – 10 Great Tips

23. March 2017

Your LinkedIn Profile could be your key to success if you are looking for a new job or want to expand your business network. Our Talent Recruiters look at many LinkedIn Profiles every day to find the right candidate our jobs in Switzerland, so we know how to make your profile great, and are happy to share our 10 best tips with you!

1. Upload a Professional Picture
Your profile picture is the first impression recruiters and HR Managers get of you. People who are not your LinkedIn contacts can often only see your photo, your name and your job title. So, we recommend using a quality photo as this will instantly give a good impression (and of course you can also use it for your CV too).

2. Add a background photo
Did you know, that you can now add a background photo to your LinkedIn Profile like on Facebook? Be creative and upload something that is related to your job. For example, if you work in IT, you could upload a photo of a motherboard or something similar.

3. Write a short summary of your CV
At the top of your LinkedIn Profile there is space for you to write a short summary about yourself (Edit intro > Summary). Which projects or tasks have you particularly enjoyed? Where were you most successful? How do you stick out from your competition? It is a good idea to use keywords in this text for example “SAP” or “Big Data”, so that your profile can be found better.

4. Describe your previous jobs
Often a job title does not provide enough information about the work you were doing. Therefore, it is helpful to briefly describe the main projects and tasks of each of your jobs throughout your career to give anyone who is viewing your profile more detailed information.

5. Add your skills
List as many skills as you can think of in this section. For example, if you enter “programming” then your LinkedIn contacts who have worked with you and know that you are good at programming can endorse your skill with one click. The skills that the most people have endorsed appear at the top of the skills list.

6. Enter your basic data
Information about what languages you speak and where you live are often very important when jobhunting. By providing this information you help your recruiter and your contacts estimate whether you are suitable for a job.

7. Personalise your URL
Follow these instructions to personalise the URL of your LinkedIn Profile. It’s really easy and looks so much cleaner!

8. Join Groups
The more groups you join, the more visible your profile becomes. In the LinkedIn search you can look for “System Engineer” or “CRM” and then you will find all groups related to that keyword, for example CRM Experts.

9. Ask for recommendations
LinkedIn has a functionality called “recommendations”. It works like this: You ask one of your contacts for a recommendation. If the person agrees, they will write a short reference text about you which will be visible on your profile. We recommend only to ask a few of your contacts and not to send off too many recommendation requests at a time. Maybe you can even take this opportunity to make people aware that you are jobhunting.
