What Makes a Job Application Photo Great?
There is an expression that says, «A picture can say more than a thousand words», is that true for the photo you send with your job application too? Of course not! The overall CV is what counts to find the right candidate for a job. However, your photo is an important part of your CV. A great photo will certainly help to make an impression with your application. It is not difficult to take a good photo if you follow a few ground rules. It also helps to think about what impression the photo will make on the person reviewing your CV. Here is some advice which could help you get a great photo for your CV.
Current Photo
One of the most important criteria for your CV photo is that it is no older than 12 months. When you go to an interview, you should look like the photo you put on your CV for that job. It is fun to surprise people, but in this case, it would not be the right thing to do.
Professional Photographer – yes or no?
When it comes to organising the photo for your CV, trying to save money is not a good idea. Depending on what position you are applying for, it would make sense to go to a professional photographer, instead of hopping in a photo booth. Some specialise in taking portrait photos for job applications. Find out which studios offer shootings in the area you live in.
Dress Code
You don't need to wear a suit if you are applying for a position as Software Engineer, but do ensure you are well-groomed. Ideally, your outfit should match the job you are applying for. For example, you can wear a smart polo shirt if you are applying for a job as a lifeguard, however, if you are applying for a job at a bank, a suit would be more suitable.
Smile, please!
A lovely smile makes a big difference on an application photo. When you smile you will come across as friendly and open minded.
Colour or black and white?
That is really a matter of taste. Take the photo in front of a neutral background and check that the photo has a high resolution.
Coopers hired a professional photographer to take the portrait photos of the team on our website. These photos would be suitable for a CV too, so have a look at our examples.
We hope you enjoy your photo shooting and wish you the best of luck with your next job application!
