5 Tips For Successful Online Job Interviews

22. April 2020

Even before the Corona crisis, job interviews were increasingly conducted online. The thought of this may still seem strange to some, but the trend is unstoppable. Applicants are therefore well advised to prepare themselves for it.

Coopers has put together a few tips to make the online interview a success.

1. Test Your Tech!
Make sure that the Internet connection is working and that you are not interrupted in between. If there are technical problems or the connection gets worse on an ad hoc basis, simply ask the interviewer to repeat what you just said. Speak clearly and not too fast to compensate for any transmission delays.
The camera: First of all, it is advisable to invest in a high-quality camera if one is not already installed or integrated on your computer or notebook. The image should be sharp and contrasty for the online interview via video, because a bad, pixelated image could unconsciously transfer to your evaluation. As far as the camera position is concerned, you are literally conducting the interview at eye level. Otherwise, depending on the camera position, your conversation partner will either have to look up to you or look down on you, which can also have an unconscious effect.
The sound: Even more important than the camera is a headset with a good microphone. After all, neither your image nor your voice should be distorted or scrawly and distract the interviewer from the contents of the interview.

2. Create a Comfortable & Professional Environment!
First impressions count! Select a spot in your home or office that is conducive for an interview. It should be clean, organized, and have an appropriate background. Additionally, be sure to dress appropriately.

3. Body Language Matters!
Without the in-person connection, body language is even more important! Avoid slouching or reclining in your chair. Do not fidget with your hands & feet. Also, maintain eye contact through the camera and avoid touching your face.

4. Practice! Practice! Practice!
If time allows, practice your virtual interview. Ask someone to play along so they can offer feedback about your environment, as well as, how you appear and sound.

5. Show your self from the best side!
"Face-to-face" can feel different through a camera and may increase your anxiety. Keep things professional as you would in-person. Listen to what the other people are saying, stay engaged, be thoughtful and honest about your responses, avoid saying "um".
